March 23rd Weather Update

Precipitation in the form of rain and snow is expected prior to 10 a.m., transitioning to rain thereafter. The snow level is forecasted to start at 5,800 feet, gradually increasing to 7,500 feet by the afternoon. The anticipated high temperature for the day is around 38 degrees Fahrenheit. Conditions will be quite blustery, with westward winds ranging from 26 to 34 mph, and gusts potentially reaching up to 46 mph. There is a 90% likelihood of precipitation, with total daytime snow accumulation projected to be less than half an inch.

Mt. Hood Meadows- ood morning! We’re a couple days into spring, and the weather is playing right along: tons of new snow yesterday, drizzle right now. We’re expecting on-and-off drizzle all day today with up to 0.25″ total rain – not so bad at all! As of early this morning, it was just a bit of mist. Not rain, not a downpour, not a gully-washer, far from the rainiest of rainy days… just a bit of chilly drizzle helping our snowpack settle. If you’re a practiced slalom skier or snowboarder, you might just be able to carve the raindrops like a racecourse and stay dry! (kidding, of course)

Joking aside… for this drizzly day, we have an accompaniment of a stiff breeze that could impact a lift or two, especially after noon. We also have an avalanche warning issued by our friends over at NWAC. Thanks to the former, the wind, Cascade and Vista are highly unlikely today. Thanks to the latter, our gated terrain will remained closed today for your safety and ours. And thanks to all the aforementioned challenges, our slopes should be relatively empty, and lift lines minimal. Show up, and you’ll reap the rewards of last night’s game of groom crew catch-up: more and better grooming than yesterday. Just make sure you’re waxed right for wet snow! And dress right too – toss a parka over your normal mountain fashion for best results. Substitute a clear plastic bag if you still want to show off your snow style. We’re here 9am-4pm today.     The weather today is going to be quite wintry starting with snow falling before 10 a. m. As the morning goes on we might see some sleet mixed in with the snow until noon. After that the snow will continue to fall throughout the afternoon. The temperature will be around 32 degrees which is chilly enough for a warm coat. Be prepared for strong winds as they will shift from the south to the west blowing at speeds of 15 to 31 mph making it feel even colder outside.

    Snow showers are expected today and they might be quite heavy at times. The temperature will be around 27 degrees making it feel chilly outside. A strong breeze will blow from the west-southwest reaching speeds of 16 to 20 miles per hour with gusts that could hit 39 miles per hour. There is an 80% chance of snow so it’s a good idea to prepare for some white stuff falling from the sky. Throughout the day we could see a total of 3 to 5 inches of snow covering everything in a beautiful blanket of white. Groomed snow is usually nice and smooth mostly made up of packed powder that feels soft under your skis or snowboard. However you might come across some spots where the wind has blown away the lighter snow leaving behind hardpack that is firmer and less forgiving. When you venture off-piste the snow can be a bit tricky. The snow is not evenly spread as it sits over a base of hardpack and bumps known as moguls. While you may find some powder it’s not deep enough to be called bottomless so be careful and keep your eyes open for any hidden obstacles.     Snow showers are expected today bringing a magical winter wonderland to our surroundings. The snow could fall heavily at times creating a soft white blanket over everything. With temperatures staying steady around 22 degrees it will feel quite chilly outside. A west-southwest wind will blow gently but it might gust strongly at times reaching up to 29 mph. There is a 90% chance of snow and we could see between 4 to 8 inches accumulating during the day making it a perfect day to ski, snowboard, nordic ski, or snowshoe! Groomed snow is a special type of snow that combines hardpack and packed powder. This mixture is often found in places that see a lot of wind or heavy use by skiers. In off-piste areas the snow is different; it includes skier-packed powder mixed with frozen granular snow. When entering these off-piste areas it is important to be careful and watch for scoured spots. These areas can be tricky and may require extra attention to navigate safely.
